Pick up the phone

The call began unlike any other.
"What is it? What’s wrong sis?"
There is nothing more difficult than bearing bleak news.
Words won’t do justice to expressions of pain, grief, and loss.
Yet we try to hold on, keeping it together as if "chin up" will lessen the hurting and ease the impossible into reality.
Sometimes the hardest part to giving care is the awareness that "first impressions" overtake your memories.
You are left feeling empty, frightened, and alone.
It can be easier to walk away, disconnectedly.
The opportunity to improve our relationships with real, live human beings after communication skills fail appears more remote the longer we live.
